Introduction

Food science and technology is a branch of science in which the food science is applied in manufacturing and preservations of food products. The food is processed, preserved, packaged and stored according to the specifications by industry and government. Department of Food science and Technology in Gomal University was established in 1982. The department is currently running B.Sc. (Hons) in Food Science and Technology, M.Sc. (Hons) and PhD programs. We focus on research based activities, visits to industries and creative learning. We arrange seminars and trainings to broaden the view of students. Our students also conduct their research work in collaboration with other institutions and research centers.

Objectives

To be recognized as an excellent institution to provide quality education by producing competent human resource capable of achieving excellence in knowledge dissemination and develop cutting edge techniques to meet the national and global challenges in food science and Technology.

Scope of food science & technology courses in Pakistan:

Today, several career options are available in Pakistan. One can choose for various food technology courses for a bright career. Food processing industry is rapidly growing in Pakistan and several employment opportunities are available in various industries. There is good scope of food technology courses which offer numerous job opportunities in various areas. One can get jobs in food processing industries, research laboratories, hotels, soft drink factories, quality control, rice mills, manufacturing industries and distilleries. Moreover, the establishment of Punjab Food Authority, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority coupled with the advent of CPEC has tremendously increased the demand for Food Science and Nutrition graduates at National level. The areas where one can find employment in this industry are: • Private and Public sector Universities • Research centers • Food processing companies and food research laboratories • Food wholesalers • Retailers • Restaurants provide employment to candidates with degrees in home science and specializations in food technology, nutrition or food services management. • Bacteriologist, toxicologists and those trained in packaging technology, organic chemistry, biochemistry and analytical chemistry can find opening food technology laboratories or in quality control departments. • Self-employment opportunities • Private sector companies have been the key players in the food sector. • Food processing industry is the 2nd largest industry in Pakistan. • Food Technologists works as: o Production Manager o Quality Assurance o Management Department o Marketing/Sales Executive o Entrepreneur
